For September’s table runner I started with an inspiration fabric:
I love the retro colors in the fabric. They feel like fall but are a bit unexpected.
I decided to make log cabin blocks. My blocks will be 7″ square and my finished quilt will be 14″ x 70″. Once the squares are finished I’ll decide on the pattern.
I searched through my fabric stash for any fabrics that fell into this color palette. I chose dark brown for the center of the blocks and split the remaining fabrics into warm colors (pinks, oranges and yellows) and cool colors (greens and blues).
I cut 1 or 2 strips of each fabric at 1 1/2″ wide and started sewing. I tried not to use the same fabric twice in a block for a scrappy look.
First I completed one square to make sure I liked the results:
Then I sewed the remaining squares assembly line style. It turns out that all those little strips take a long time to sew together! I’m happy with the results so far but next month I’ll chose an easier design.
Next week – the finished quilt.
